Sadly Justin didn’t have renters insurance despite Roosevelt repeatedly barking at him that it was a good idea. They lost everything in the fire except each other.
Justin will use the donations to help rebuild his wardrobe, buy new household necessities, replace the hardware he needs for his dissertation, replace his field/camping equipment and pay for his medical bills.
Justin lost all of his clothes (except a single pair of shorts and underwear) in the fire. He needs to replace his entire causal and professional wardrobe, including his signature cowboy boots.
Justin has to replace all of his kitchen equipment and utensils, toiletries, towels, bedding, beard trimmers, and even deodorant (everyone except for Roosevelt will appreciate that).
Justin needs to purchase new data gathering, processing, and visualization equipment. This includes a digital camera for photographing specimens, a digitizer for outlining bird feathers and wings, and computers and monitors for creating and visualizing 2D and 3D renderings and conducting statistical analysis on large datasets.
Justin has been doing field work excavating fossils off and on since 2000, and has lead his own field crew under his advisor’s supervision for the last 3 years. He lost all of the field equipment that he has accumulated over the years in the fire. Due to his injuries, Justin will be unable to do field work this summer or next summer, but before he returns to the field, he will need to replace his GPS unit, coolers, tent, sleeping bags, hiking boots, hiking socks, lanterns, digging equipment etc…
Justin spent nearly a week in the burn unit at LA County-USC hospital, and is receiving ongoing medical care. He doesn’t know the total extent of his medical expenses yet, but it is likely that his medical bills, medications, and supplies will total over $100,000. His insurance will cover most of it, but the percentage that he has to pay will still total many thousands of dollars.
Roosevelt will use his donations to buy a comfy new dog bed, dog treats/chews that are made in the USA, some stuffed animals that he can pull the stuffing and squeaker out of, a new retractable leash so he can run as far as possible ahead on walks, 1,000 new poops bags from Amazon so he can poop on every patch of grass that smells like other dogs, a new couch for dad that is just right for a dog to sleep on, and a new big soft bed for dad that a dog can commandeer.
